Questions frequently asked by those already practising Ashtanga yoga...

How often should I practise ?

Traditionally Ashtanga yoga is a 6 day practise with 1 day a week off. However, by practising 3 times a week you should start to really feel the benefits and make progress. Practising twice a week you should be able to make some progress or maintain where you are but by practising only once a week it's really just a hobby !

I sweat so much when I practise, what should I do ?

Sweating is part of the practise and some people naturally sweat more than other people. Sweating is all part of the cleansing process. Keep on sweating....but please bring a towel for when we adjust you !

I've noticed my sweat smells strange when I practise. Why ?

The sweating process brings toxins and impurities out of the body. Sometimes they do smell, you are cleansing. Usually it passes after a period of time.

I just don't seem to make any progress. What can I do ?

Ashtanga yoga is all about developing self-awareness and being the practise. When we stop 'doing' our practise then change occurs naturally.

Should I practise when I'm menstruating ?

It is wise not to practise on the first day of menstruation. On the following days do not do any inverted postures - put your legs up the wall instead.

Can I still practise if I am pregnant ?

If you already have an established practise, generally it is OK to continue practising but you MUST tell us immediately as we will need to modify some postures for you. Certain postures are prohibited during pregancy.

I have had an accident and have pain in my knee/elbow/wrist etc, should I still practise ?

Yes. Tell us immediately and we will help you modify your practise in the most apprpriate manner - Ashtanga is a healing practise and we can learn some of our greatest lessons when we are 'injured'.

My mind constantly keeps thinking about day-to-day things. What can I do ?

This is natural. Try as best as you can to be mindful and keep bringing your awareness back to your practise. Focus on the breath, the bandhas and the dristi. Training the mind to remain aware is like training a small puppy, just keep reminding it and eventually a calmness will come to the mind.

I am on medication, will this interfere with my practise long term ?

The short answer is yes, but....sometimes we need medication to cope with life and living. Slowly, slowly and with awareness you may be able to reduce it.
