Guidelines and Q&A
Here are a few guidelines to help you get the most out of your practise
- Practise on an empty stomach. Wait for at least 3 to 4 hours after a substantial meal.
- Be well hydrated before you come to class and do not drink during the practise.
- Wear something that is comfortable and elastic. Shorts/leggings and vests are ideal as they allow us to see the alignment of your body. Leggings that end below the ankle are not recommended as they 'get in the way'.
- Do not be scared to get hot and sweaty, it is part of the practise.
- If you feel exhausted after your practise you have done too much, the aim is to feel energised.
- The relaxation at the end is very important. Do not skip it and rush off to do other things.
- Do not wear large jewellery and watches or put them on the floor next to your mat - it could be dangerous to you and us.
- Try not to wear spectacles. When you start it may be necessary to use them to help with balance during the standing poses but please take them off for the surya namaskaras and seated postures. Please don't leave spectacles on the floor - we may tread on them !
- Try not to be covered in paraffin based moisturisers and body lotions - they prevent the important function of sweating.
- Try not to use anti-perspirants or deodorants - again they prevent the important function of sweating.
- Try not to wear make-up - be yourself !
- Do be kind to yourself, try not to over-strain and try not to compete with yourself or others.
- Try and keep your awareness on your practise. When your mind wonders off onto other things, bring it back to the present. There is plenty to hold our concentration if we focus on breath, bandhas, dristi, posture and the flow of the practice !
- If fear or strong emotions arise, try and observe them rather than become them - give them more space, try not to hold onto them tightly.
- And last but not least....Enjoy your practise !
